UW-Madison Google Workspace - Google Sites
DoIT offers several services to help you publish websites at UW—Madison, including WiscWeb, the UW KnowledgeBase, Google Sites, and Web Hosting. Use this guide to compare the benefits and differences between them.
Use case
The Office of Strategic Communication recommends the WiscWeb WordPress Service for most website-creation needs on campus. The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) provides the service free to campus. With WiscWeb, units can build and customize their own accessible, UW-branded, and mobile-friendly websites to follow and meet the minimum web requirements for campus.
Google Sites are recommended for simple websites for personal use or short-term needs like promoting one time events. Example use cases might include:
- Personal portfolios, blogs, or resumes
- Faculty, staff, or student bio sites
- Student projects
- Student org sites that are not a registered organization. (Note that all registered student organizations should use WIN for their website needs.)
- Researchers in need of a one-page site where participants can sign-up for their study.
- Groups who cannot use WiscWeb because they do not pay into central IT funding or are not eligible to use the service.
