UW-Madison Google Workspace - Transfer folders and files from My Drive to Shared Drives

Google does not provide the option to drag and drop folders from My Drive to Shared Drives. However, files can be dragged and dropped into Shared Drives.

Individuals attempting to drag and drop folders from My Drive to Shared Drives will receive the following error message, "Folders can't be moved into Shared Drives yet."

Workarounds

Below are two workarounds for transferring folders and files from My Drive to Shared Drives:

  1. Workaround 1: Download My Drive folders and files and upload to Shared Drives.

  2. Workaround 2: Install Google Drive File Stream

Note: In order to move files owned by user bbadger into a Shared Drive, bbadger must be a member of the Shared Drive. bbadger can be removed from the Shared Drive after files are migrated.
