Withdrawing an application

Below are directions for how to withdraw an application. Please note that the process differs depending on when the applicant requests to be withdrawn.

Withdrawing application before recommendation or denial:

If an applicant requests to withdraw an application before the program has had the chance to recommend or deny the applicant admission, there are three ways the application can be withdrawn:

  • The applicant can withdraw their application themselves, following the directions below:
    1. Log in to the application for the Graduate School at https://gradapply.wisc.edu/apply/
    2. Go to the application status page by selecting the application link
    3. On the status page, select the Applicant Withdrawal link (see screenshot below):

Withdrawing application after recommendation and before matriculation:

If an applicant requests to withdraw an application after the program has recommended the applicant for admission and the applicant has not yet been matriculated, there are two ways the applicant can be withdrawn:

  • The applicant can withdraw their application themselves, following the same directions as above:
    1. Log in to the application for the Graduate School at https://gradapply.wisc.edu/apply/
    2. Go to the application status page by selecting the application link
    3. On the status page, select the Applicant Withdrawal link
    4. Fill out a short form to confirm the withdrawal

  • The program can withdraw the application on behalf of the applicant, following the directions below:
    1. Search for the applicant in Slate
    2. Select the Application Tab for the application
    3. Select the Applicant Withdrawal After Recommendation (G59) link (see screenshot below) and then submitting the short form to confirm the withdrawal

Withdrawing application as a result of declining admission offer:

Once an applicant is officially admitted to the Graduate School, the applicant will be asked to fill out a form located at the bottom of their status page either accepting or declining their offer of admission. If the applicant declines the offer of admission in this form, the application will be withdrawn (and a G59 code will be applied to the record) as long as they are not already matriculated for admission.

Withdrawing application after matriculation:

You can see if an applicant has been matriculated by checking their status on the Application Tab, which will state Admit/Matric (see screenshot below).

In order to withdraw an application after the student has been matriculated, we have to involve the Office of the Registrar, so you will have to email the Graduate School Office of Admissions at AdmissionStaff@grad.wisc.edu

Please provide the following information in your email to the Graduate School

  • Name (first and last)
  • Campus ID
  • Admitting Program
  • Proof that the applicant has requested to be withdrawn (e.g., a copy of the email requesting to be withdrawn)
