Information about requesting competitive counteroffers for Ph.D. students matriculating in Fall 2021
The Graduate School has a pool of resources to allocate for FY22 that may enhance your ability to recruit Ph.D. program applicants to UW-Madison in situations where they have offers from peer institutions. These resources are in the form of one-time "welcome checks" or stipend enhancements not to exceed $5000/applicant. We are hopeful that the concept will help tip the balance in our favor so that UW-Madison “wins” against competing admitting peer institutions and we can bring the best possible graduate students to our campus, and have been pleased with the results in the last three years.

Requests can be submitted at any time. Associate Dean Lisa Martin will respond to requests on 18 February; 11 March; and 1 April, 2021. Any requests received after 1 April will be considered if funds remain.Please note that welcome checks can only be paid in accordance with the Division of Business Services policy: https://businessservices.wisc.edu/making-payments/payments-to-students/welcome-checks/ . In particular, for domestic students, these funds will be uploaded to their bursar's account. We typically do this in early August. For non-resident aliens, they must be paid through payroll, and only after students have arrived on campus with the necessary paperwork. International students therefore will not receive their welcome check until their first paycheck.
