COVID-19 Graduate Admissions and Fellowships Deferment

In response to the worldwide situation brought about by COVID-19, the Graduate School is prepared to offer flexibility for requests from admitted students to defer their fall 2020 admission to the spring, summer, or fall 2021 semesters without fees or re-application. The Graduate School will not, however, defer admission of any student without a program’s recommendation to do so.

Programs that are expecting a large number of deferment requests are strongly urged to create a plan and a process for handling these requests. In making these plans, please consider factors such as: (i) availability of courses for the students to take in the new admitting semester, (ii) ability of the program to meet the funding guarantees made in the offers, (iii) the impact on the program’s capacity in future semesters, and (iv) the program’s ability to effectively advise, offer orientation, and carry out other onboarding activities in the deferred semesters. Note that deferrals may affect the number of applicants who can be admitted in a future semester. The Graduate School may ask programs about their plans, especially when a program makes a large number of deferment recommendations.

When a program receives a request for deferment from a student, please advise the student and work with the student to identify the semester (spring 2021, summer 2021, or fall 2021) to which the deferment should occur. Please forward the approved requests to the Graduate School Admissions Office (based on alpha-split) via email.

Fellowships Deferment: The Graduate School will permit graduate students who defer admissions offers to spring 2021, summer 2021, or fall 2021 to also defer fellowships awarded through the GSSC and other Graduate School funding programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a new I20 be needed?

Please refer to the ISS COVID-19 webpage for information regarding the process for an updated I-20 for new students and continuing students. This document is specific to how new international graduate students can request an updated I-20.

Does admit mean recommended for admission by a program or admitted by the Graduate School?

Admitted by the Graduate School.

What about applicants that have not been yet been admitted?

At this point only adjacent terms will be considered.

Is the student required to pay the application fee again?

No, if a student deferral is approved, they are not required to pay the application fee again.

What semesters can they defer to?

Right now we are only accepting deferrals to spring 2021, summer 2021, and fall 2021.

Is the program or student required to complete a form to request a deferral?

The program should send an email to the Alpha split with the students information (first name last name campus ID) as well as the term they are deferring to.

How will the students show in applicant review?

The students will show in the ‘final processing tab’ under the new term they have been deferred to. You can filter by different terms by selecting the ‘term’ box in the ‘active filter’ box at the top of the page.

Can a student do multiple term changes?

Yes, a program can request for a student to be moved to another term due to COVID. At this time we are only allowing students to defer to Spring 2021, Summer 2021, or Fall 2021.
