Query Library Training Session
November 6, 8:30 - 10:00 am
This session is designed for coordinators and administrators who work with graduate student to learn what queries are available in the query library for graduate student data. The session will be held in a computer lab and allow participants to run queries for their own programs. Participants should request access to the query library prior to the session if they do not already have it. To register click here.

The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC), a research center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and the Graduate School will be giving away premiere tickets to 18 UW-Madison graduate students during a three-week contest. Six winners will be chosen from the pool of correct answers and notified via email Monday morning, November 4. Each winner will receive two tickets along with two reserved seats on a bus to the premiere.
The contest began October 28. The first question was included in Monday's GradConnections. You have until noon Friday, November 1, to submit an answer to mailto:email@example.com. Look for additional chances to win by answering questions in the November 4 and 11 editions of GradConnections. Follow the contest on Twitter at #ghostparticle.

Graduate School Policy Changes Related to the Higher Learning
Commission’s (HLC) Criteria for Institutional Accreditation
The official campus communication regarding HLC-related policy changes was sent Monday, October 28, 2013. The email memo and all relevant resources are available in the GSAdminKB here: https://kb.wisc.edu/GSAdminKB/page.php?id=34777. The information and data resources provided in the KB will help schools/colleges/programs assess which policy areas and programs are in need of attention or are already in compliance. In many cases, programs simply need to articulate their practices into stated policies. The KB will continue to be updated as clarifications are needed. Please review the information carefully. The Graduate School
maintains information about staff in all graduate-degree granting departments
and programs. You can use this directory to view other program's contact
information. We use this directory when sending information to departmental
faculty and staff. The Graduate School relies on departments/programs to keep
their directory up to date. To find out who should be updating your directory,
check with your admissions coordinator or program chair.

Our Academic Programs
This list, called "Our Academic Programs" or "Major Areas of Study", includes all active graduate-level academic programs at UW-Madison. This page is frequented by prospective graduate students seeking more information about our programs. Within each page we link to the program website; provide contact information for admissions; list deadlines and admissions requirements, including whether or not the GRE is required; and give program statistical information on admissions, enrollment, student funding, and degrees.
The Graduate School will open up e-warrant testing to more users this fall. If you would like to volunteer as a tester contact Michelle Holland at firstname.lastname@example.org. Coordinators will receive information on how the Graduate School will proceed with e-warrants at a future date. There will be online tutorials and instructions when we go live. An additional note, the Graduate School will be will be testing the masters exit survey for employment in e-warrants.
Website update and online resources for Graduate Program
The redesigned Graduate School website is scheduled to go live some time in November. We've been put the finishing touches on the pages and conducting usability testing with various groups on campus. We will be in contact soon with tips/screenshots for finding what you need in the new site. Feel free to explore the test site in the meantime, but please keep in mind it is a work in progress! We've also been identifying content to be moved into the Graduate School Knowledge Base or KB. Much of the information for graduate programs you now find on the web will be moved into the KB.
This KB is an essential resource for graduate programs. In it you will find information about:
- Academic assessment and planning (e.g. program reviews and approvals)
- Communications and connections (e.g. who to call in the Graduate School, CoordLink newsletters, policy updates, graduate coordinator meeting minutes)
- Graduate student recruitment (e.g. GPAS training video, recruitment manual, recruitment brochures and templates, Graduate School partnerships)
- Graduate student admissions (e.g. applicant records review and evaluation process, international admissions information, application fee grants, student status check)
- Enrolled graduate student information and procedures (e.g. satisfactory academic progress, dissertator information)
- Graduate student funding (e.g. handbook on administering graduate student appointments, tuition remission information for external fellowships, University Fellowships information)
- Graduate degree completion (e.g. dissertation deposit procedures, completion letters, warrant/e-warrant process)
- Campus data resources and tools (e.g. campus data collections, Query Library information, profiles)
- Skills and professional development for graduate coordinators (e.g. links to Graduate School Seminar Series, OHRD, Career Development Facilitator Training)

Graduate Program Handbook Template
The Graduate School has developed a working-draft Graduate Program handbook template to be used as a resource for those graduate programs that do not yet have a handbook, as well as a referential resource for those programs that have already developed a handbook (click here for the draft.) The template is a working draft in progress; if you have any suggestions for additions or feedback, please email the content area section consultants, listed at the end of each section within the template. If you are interested in volunteering to be a part of a focus group that may meet multiple time with Graduate School section consultants to discuss, suggest and strengthen content areas within the template that may benefit from expansion, please email Jennifer Martin at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Graduate Coordinator Coaching Network - Sharon Kahn, Deb McFarlane, Angel Thorp
The Graduate Program Coordinator Planning committee is proposing a coaching network. Our plan is to poll current coordinators to find individuals who would be willing to answer questions and generally lend a hand to new coordinators as they navigate the sometimes confusing world of the work we do. Watch for this poll in the next month or so!
UHS and the UW-Madison Suicide Prevention Council is pleased to announce the launch of At-Risk for University Faculty & Staff, an online, interactive educational program that builds skills in interacting effectively with students in distress. At-Risk will remain available online and can be revisited any number of times.
UHS needs your help to ensure campus-wide use of this educational resource. Please share this information with faculty and peers in your departments, encourage participation, and convey your support for this important initiative.
