Course Search & Enroll - Wait List FAQ

logo

This document answers frequently asked questions about the Wait List functionality and process.

Overview

When going through the enrollment process, if a class is closed and the department is maintaining a waiting list, a yellow triangle will display on that section throughout class search and the enrollment process.

If you would like to be placed on the wait list, you'll need to check the box titled "Waitlist me if course is full when I enroll" and continue through the enrollment process to finalize your request.

If you are allowed to enroll for the class section, you will be notified via email. Enrolling for the class is the student's responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers

How many classes and/or credits can I place myself on the wait list for?

Undergraduate students can be on up to 18 credits of wait-listed classes in the Fall and Spring terms, and up to 12 credits of wait-listed classes in the Summer term.

Graduate students (not yet in dissertator status) can be on up to 15 credits of wait-listed classes in the Fall and Spring terms, and up to 12 credits of wait-listed classes in the Summer term.

Other types of students also follow the maximum number of enrolled credits allowed for their program each term.

Note: Enrolled credits do not count against the maximum number of wait-listed credits.

When is the earliest I can place myself on a wait list?

You are eligible to place yourself on the wait list once your enrollment appointment date/time have been reached. The following conditions must also apply:

  • A class section is closed
  • You meet the enrollment requirements of that section
  • The wait list capacity has not been reached

When is the latest I can place myself on a wait list?

Through 11:59 p.m. of the add deadline date for the session in which the class is offered.

Will wait listed classes appear in Course Search & Enroll?

If a class is closed and the department is using the wait list functionality, class sections will be represented with a yellow triangle within Course Search & Enroll.

In order to view wait listed sections, make sure to check the Wait listed checkbox when searching for courses.

Why am I unable to place myself on the wait list?

An error message will inform you of the problem. Some possible reasons:

  • You have a hold on your record preventing enrollment
  • Your enrollment appointment date/time has not been reached
  • You do not meet the enrollment requirements enforced for the class section
  • Instructor or Department Consent is required to enroll for the class
  • The wait list capacity has been reached for the class section
  • No wait list capacity has been determined by the department for the class section
  • You have reached the maximum term credit limit
  • Class section is Open
  • The Last Date to wait list has passed
  • You are already enrolled for a different section of the same class with the same enrollment package.

Will I be able to see my position on the wait list?

No, you will receive a message confirming that you have been placed on the wait, but it will not reveal your wait list position number.
The course will now appear under the Wait list in the My Courses tab.

How long before a department notifies me whether I'll be able to enroll for this class or not?

The length of time it may take for a department to determine who will be allowed to enroll will vary by department. Please contact the department directly for further information.

How will I know when I can enroll for a class that I am on the wait list for?

Once a department determines that you will be allowed to enroll for the section, you will receive an email notifying you of this and how long your permission will be valid. To enroll for the class from the wait list, go to your list of waitlisted courses in Course Search & Enroll and continue through the enrollment process to finalize your enrollment.

Note: Receiving permission does not enroll you in the waitlisted course; you will still have to enroll yourself!

Can I place myself on the wait list for more than one section of the same class?

You can be on multiple wait lists for the same class, up to the wait list maximum, as long as they are considered different enrollment packages. For example, if a class has two different lectures and each lecture has discussion sections associated with it, you could be on the wait list for LEC 001 and DIS 301 while also on the wait list for LEC 002 DIS 315. You could not, however, be on the wait list for two different discussions associated with LEC 001.

Will I remain on the wait last after I have enrolled for the class?

No, you will be removed from the wait list once you are enrolled for the class.

If enrolled on the wait list for other enrollment packages of the same course, your wait list enrollment for those packages will also be dropped when you enroll in one one section of the class. Example: You are on wait lists for LEC 001, LEC 004, and LEC 006, and receive permission to enroll off the wait list into LEC 006. When you enroll in LEC 006, you will simultaneously be dropped from the wait lists for LEC 001 and LEC 004.

Once enrolled, you may re-enroll on wait lists for other sections/distinct enrollment packages of the course. Your original wait list position will not be restored. See “I’m already enrolled for a section of this class. Can I enroll on the wait list for another section?” for additional details.

I'm already enrolled for a section of this class. Can I enroll on the wait list for another section?

You cannot get on the waitlist for an enrollment package if that package has a component you are already enrolled in.  For example, if you are enrolled in LEC 001 & DIS 301 and wish to enroll for the waitlist on LEC 001 & DIS 303, you cannot. However, if it is an entirely different section/enrollment package, such as LEC 002 & DIS 310, you can enroll on the waitlist.

You will see a validation message in your cart about multiple enrollments, but that is just a warning. You will be able to proceed with enrollment onto the wait list of a new section with a different enrollment package despite the multiple enrollments warning message.

Can I see other students placed on the wait list for a class section?

No, you can only confirm whether you are on the wait list.

Do all classes have a wait list?

No, not all classes will have a wait list. It will be up to a department as to whether a wait list will be maintained. Once a class closes, you will see a yellow triangle throughout the enrollment process indicating that wait list is available for that section.

Can I wait list for a class that has a time conflict with another class?

Yes, you are allowed to wait list for a class that may have a time conflict.

I want to remove a wait listed class from my schedule. What do I do?

Use the Drop function within Course Search & Enroll. See: Course Search & Enroll - Dropping a Class.

The class is wait listed but there are available seats. Why can't I enroll?

Once the class availability is listed as "Wait list seats available," you can only enroll into the wait list. While it's possible to see indication of available seats, that number is related to the department's enrollment management.
