Course Search & Enroll – Build and Compare Schedules

This document gives tips on how to use the Scheduler in the Course Search & Enroll app to build and compare schedules.

Overview

The Scheduler tool in Course Search & Enroll shows weekly calendar layouts of the classes from your cart. You can use this tool to view different combinations of sections to find the time slots that work best for you, compare different schedule options, and set up blocks to avoid scheduling classes at certain times.

Once you have added classes to your cart (see Course Search & Enroll - Add & Enroll in Classes), open Scheduler from anywhere within Course Search & Enroll by selecting the "Scheduler" tab from the menu at the top of the screen.

Schedule Breaks (No Classes During This Time)

Need to block off time for work, sports, club meetings, or other activities? Set up “breaks” to add them to your schedule. Scheduler won’t display combinations of classes that overlap on these times if your settings don't allow conflicts.

  1. Click the "Add break" button in the menu along the top of the screen.

An orange box highlights the add break button

  2. In the pop-up window, set the days and times of your break, and give the break a name. To remove or edit an existing break, click on the break block in the schedule.

Browse Different Schedules

Scroll through the various schedule options using the right and left arrow buttons. You can also click "Show schedule list" and select the schedule you'd like to view.

As classes open or fill, the combinations may change. The schedules themselves may not appear in the same sequence.

Too many schedules? Lock specific sections for a class or add schedule breaks. Not enough schedules? Unlock your classes, change your preferences, or remove a schedule break.

Compare Schedules

As you view your schedule options, select the "Mark to compare" button or click the bookmark icon next to each option you want to add to the side-by-side comparison view.

Compare schedules

Once you've selected all of the schedules you want to view, click the "Compare" button in the upper right corner of the screen.

You can repeat this process as many times as you’d like to narrow down schedule options.

If you’d like to lock one or multiple course sections, follow the steps under the “Save Sections” heading of this document.

Tip: If you find a course section or schedule you’d like to remember, take a photo/screenshot or write it down. You cannot save multiple schedules in the compare view.

Control Which Sections Show

Refine your schedule options by limiting or expanding the class sections that will be included in the combinations.

Select to Show or Hide Wait Listed Courses, Reserved Sections, and/or Conflicts

  1. Click the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner, then select “Preferences.”

Orange boxes highlight the three vertical dots menu and the Preferences option

  2. Select the checkbox(es) next to the option(s) you want to show (or uncheck the checkbox(es) next to the option(s) you want to hide):
    • Show wait listed courses: Choose this option to show/hide courses that are full/closed for enrollment but have a wait list you can join.
      • Note: If you have locked a class with wait listed sections and uncheck the “show wait listed courses” box, that class will still appear in schedules (because it is locked). If you unlock that class, it will not show in schedules because now your preferences cause wait listed classes to not show.
    • Show reserved sections: Choose this option to show/hide sections specifically reserved for students in certain groups, like those in a First-Year Interest Group (FIG), those who live in a certain residence hall, etc.
    • Show conflicts: Choose this option to show/hide combinations where classes may overlap in their meeting times.
      • Note: If you have added schedule breaks and have checked “show conflicts,” you may also see classes that take place during those break times.

Edit Which Sections You’re Interested In

If a class has several sections but only some of them interest you, you can limit the Scheduler to only show these specific sections.

  1. Select the class in the list on the left side of Scheduler. You can also click on one of the class blocks in the grid and then choose “See sections” from the pop-up window.
  2. Uncheck the checkbox next to the sections you would like to remove. Classes with some sections unchecked will have two check marks next to their name in the list on the left side.

An orange box highlights the overlapping checkmarks next to a course title indicating only some sections are used to generate schedules

Save Sections

If you want to keep a specific day/time option for a class in all the available combinations, save that section.

Select one of the blocks for the class in the grid. In the pop-up window, select the "Save section" button.

A class will be saved and "locked" by default in Scheduler if, when searching for classes, you added a specific section to the cart or if the course only has one section.

To unlock a class with more than one section, open the class pop-up window again and select the "Remove section" button.

Exam Schedule

To view the final exam schedule (list view) for this combination of classes, click the three dots menu in the upper-right corner and select "Exam schedule.” When you change schedules, the exam times may also change.

Save Schedule (to Cart)

When you have found your preferred combination of course sections, click the “Save Schedule” button to add the course sections for the displayed weekly grid in your cart.

In the pop-up window, review your course sections and then click “Save schedule.”

Your selected course sections will then be in your cart when you go to enroll. Course Search & Enroll will show you any options that can be selected for these classes (like getting on a wait list for full classes, or taking a class for Honors).

Note: Course sections may fill up between when you add them to your cart and when you enroll.
