Microsoft Security Essentials (Win) - Detecting and Removing Viruses
Installation

Download Microsoft Security Essentials.

Run the installer.

Click Next in the window that appears.

Click I accept if you accept the license to continue

You will be asked to validate your copy of Windows. Click Validate to do so.
If your copy of Windows is valid, you can continue the installation. If it's not valid please call the DoIT Help Desk at (608) 264-HELP (608-264-4357)

Click Install to start the installation process.

Check the "scan my computer for potential threats after getting the latest updates" box to perform a scan once the installation finishes. Click Finish to complete the installation.
Running a Virus Scan

First you should update your client. To do so, go to the Update tab and click on the Update button.

Once the update is complete, go to the Home tab, select the Full radio button under Scan Options, and click on the Scan now button.

The scan will take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours depending on how many files you have, how big your hard drive/s are, and how fast your computer is.

Once the scan is complete, if the scan comes back clean, you should see the following window:

If the scan detects some infections, please run the scan again until it comes back clean. If you have any problems, feel free to contact the Help Desk.
