UW-Madison Google Workspace - Conflicting Accounts
This document describes the process users will need to go through if they have a personal Google Apps account that conflicts with their UW-Madison email address.
What is a conflicting account?
If you have a personal Google Account with the same email address as a UW-Madison managed Google Account, then you have a conflicting account. For example, this can happen you created a personal Google Account using the @wisc.edu UW-Madison domain name before UW-Madison offered Google Apps as an enterprise service. These accounts can't share the same email address, and you’ll need to resolve the conflict.
Example : Bucky Badger created a personal account for Google Docs using "bbadger@wisc.edu" before UW-Madison offered Google Apps to campus. When UW-Madison turned on Google Apps for campus, a second, conflicting account was created for "bbadger@wisc.edu".

How do I resolve a conflicting account?
- Go to https://www.google.com.
- Log into your temporary personal Google Workspace account.
- Personal UW-Madison account: netid%wisc.edu@gtempaccount.com
- Ex: bbadger%wisc.edu@gtempaccount.com
- Departmental account: netid%department.wisc.edu@gtempaccount.com
- Ex: bbadger%education.wisc.edu@gtempaccount.com
- Determine data migration strategy for your personal account.
- Option 1: Migrate data from your personal Google Workspace account to your enterprise
UW-Madison Google Workspace account.
- Recommended: If you are storing university data in your
personal Google Workspace Account, move the university data to your enterprise
UW-Madison Google Workspace account.
- Google Workspace's migration wizard will allow you to view a list of data that cannot be migrated.
- Option 2: Do not migrate the data from your personal account to your enterprise UW-Madison Google Workspace account.
- Associate your personal Google Workspace account with another e-mail address.
- Option 1: Create a new Google Workspace account with an @gmail.com address.
- Note: In most cases, it's not possible to move products from one Google Account to another. See Moving Product Data for a list of products that do support this. You can also view UW-Madison Google Workspace - Preserve your data for more information on backing up data.
- Option 2: Use a non-Google e-mail address you already own.
- Note: Select this option if you want Google products but not Gmail.
