Departmental VPN (Win) - Downloading and Installing the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client
This document describes how to download and install the Cisco AnyConnect client on a Windows machine.
If you are using Internet Explorer, you will first need to add "http://vpn.wisc.edu/" to Internet Explorer's list of trusted sites. To do this, follow the directions found here: Internet Explorer - Trusting a Web Site.
Point your web browser to http://vpn.wisc.edu/
The page is divided into three campus regions (East, West, and Central) with an additional section for WiscVPN connections. Look for your department name under the appropriate campus region.
If you do not see your department listed, then your department may not have opted for a departmental VPN connection or may not be eligible. Contact your department's network administrator if you would like to request a departmental VPN connection.
If your department has more than one connection type available, contact your network administrator to find out which connection type is appropriate for the type of access you need.
Log in with your departmental login credentials.
Once you have logged in, the AnyConnect client will begin downloading automatically after a 30 second delay. Click Start now to begin downloading and installing the client immediately.
Note: If the web installation fails for any reason, you will be presented with a link to the installer file for your operating system. Click on this link, then follow the instructions to complete the installation offline.
As soon as the client is installed, it will connect to your department VPN connection automatically. Look for a connection message and the AnyConnect icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen:
You can disconnect from VPN at any time by selecting the icon in the task bar and clicking the Disconnect button in the AnyConnect window.
If you are running Windows 7 or earlier, the installer will have created a Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client program entry in All Programs... or Program Files.
If you are running Windows 8, you will find the AnyConnect client listed under All Apps.
