This document explains how to configure Windows XP for use with the Wireless UWNet on campus and how to connect to Wireless UWNet access points.
DoIT provides support for Wireless UWNet only through the DoIT Service Desk. Best effort support will be attempted over the phone.
NOTE: Windows 95/98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista are no longer supported by the Help Desk. We can only provide best effort support. If we are unable to resolve your Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista issue, you may be able to find help in Microsoft's Knowledge Base.
These products are no longer actively supported by Microsoft. No further development will take place on these products and security updates are no longer issued. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 10 or 8.
Note: If you have Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed, the directions will vary from those below. We recommend upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 2.
To verify Service Pack 2 is installed:
- Click Start | Run
- Type winver in the window that appears and click OK
- You will be presented with a window that displays the version of Windows you are using and any service packs that are installed.
- If "Service Pack 2" is listed, then Service Pack 2 is installed and you can proceed with the instructions below.
- If "Service Pack 1" is listed, then you should install Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 can be installed by running Windows Update or picking up a Service Pack 2 CD from the DoIT Service Desk.
To verify your wireless card is installed properly:
- Click Start | Control Panel or Start | Settings | Control Panel
- Select System | Hardware tab | Device Manager
- If you do not see the System icon, click Switch to Classic View on the left.
- Under Network Adapters your wireless card should appear.
- If it has a yellow exclamation mark, then the drivers are not installed or are not working properly. Reinstall the wireless card drivers.
- If it has a red X, then it may be disabled. Right-click on it and select Enable.
- If the wireless card is not present in the list of network adapters, then it is possible that the drivers are not installed properly. Reinstall the wireless card drivers.
To connect to Wireless UWNet:
- Right-click on the wireless connection icon in the system tray (typically located in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, next to the clock) and a menu will appear, select View Available Wireless Networks.
- A window will appear that will display the wireless networks available in your area. Depending on your location, UWNet wireless network names will appear as UWNet or UWNet-(building name), where (building name) is the name of the building you are in or closest to. Select the appropriate connection and click Connect. If you do not see any wireless networks listed, make sure your wireless card is active and you are within wireless UWNet access range.
- Once connected, open a web browser and go to any website. You will be redirected to login with your NetID and password. Please note that the appearance of this login page may vary depending on whether you are on a building-specific connection or the general UWNet connection. Once logged in, you can freely use Wireless UWNet.
- To check your signal strength, double click on the wireless connection icon in the Network Connections control panel or system tray and observe the signal strength.
Troubleshoot UWNet prompt issues
If you are able to successfully connect to UWNet wireless but there is no login prompt please follow these troubleshooting steps.
- Click Start | Control Panel or Start | Settings | Control Panel.
- Select Network Settings.
- Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
- Scroll to the bottom of the window and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select Properties.
- Make sure that you have selected Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
NOTE: Before selecting "Obtain IP address automatically " and "Obtain DNS server address automatically", be sure to write down any settings and information on this screen. You may need this information when connecting to your regular internet service provider.
- Click Ok to save and close the windows.
