Office 365 (Outlook 2016) - Cached Exchange Mode

Certain groups and users may find it necessary to run Outlook in Non-cached Exchange Mode. These are instructions for disabling Cached Exchange Mode in the Windows Outlook 2016 client.

Disable Cached Exchange Mode

  1. Launch the Outlook desktop client
  2. Click on the "File" menu in the upper left corner of the main Outlook window
  3. Then click on the "Account Settings" tile, and choose "Account Settings..." from the dropdown menu

  4. From the Account Settings window, click on your email address and then click the "Change" button

  5. On the following screen, uncheck "Use Cached Exchange Mode" to disable this feature. Then click "Next."

  6. You will be prompted to restart Outlook to apply the change. Click "OK" to dismiss this message.

  7. Click "Finish" to finish applying the changes to the account. Then click "Close" to close the Account Settings window.
  8. You should now be back to the main Outlook window. Go to the "File" menu once again, and then choose "Exit" to fully close the program.

  9. Relaunch Outlook to apply the changes. 

Enabling Cached Exchange Mode

You may need to re-enable this feature in the future. The steps to re-apply this setting are similar to the steps to disable it.
  1. Launch the Outlook desktop client
  2. Click on the "File" menu in the upper left corner of the main Outlook window
  3. Then click on the "Account Settings" tile, and choose "Account Settings..." from the dropdown menu

  4. From the Account Settings window, click on your email address and then click the "Change" button

  5. On the following screen, make sure "Use Cached Exchange Mode" is checked to enable this feature. 
  6. For "Mail to keep offline" the default is All. Change this parameter to either 3 or 6 months by dragging the slider. Then click "Next."

  7. You will be prompted to restart Outlook to apply the change. Click "OK" to dismiss this message.
  8. You should now be back to the main Outlook window. Go to the "File" menu once again, and then choose "Exit" to fully close the program.

  9. Finally, relaunch Outlook to re-apply Cached Exchange Mode
