Introduction to CSI

Summary: An introduction to CSI and its use at UW-Madison.

Lesson Topics

Introduction

Welcome to Campus Space Information (CSI). CSI is the system of record for facility and space information for all UW-Madison facilities.

The Space Management Office is the official campus steward for collecting, maintaining, and delivering CSI.

UW-Madison uses OpenBlue (formerly FM:Systems) as the CSI software platform, providing role-based access to information. Its features allow users to interact with data in ways that best support their needs.

Types of Space Information

Users can access space data via a web browser in interactive ways.

  • Facilities level data -- includes facility number, names, address, site, type, characteristics, dates, and administrative details.
  • Room level data -- includes room number, name, square footage, department assignments, use, function, office occupancy, classroom seating, and lab PIs and grants.
  • Floor plan data – includes graphics that interact with room data via displays, labels, and color hatching for buildings that have drawings on file.

Flexible Delivery Options

The CSI software provides multiple ways to access and refine data to best match user needs.

  • Floor plans – Interact with and export floor plans, including basic, color-coded, and annotated plans.
  • Views – Explore detailed data for facilities, floors, and rooms in a clickable interface.
  • Reports – Access and export facility, floor, and room data in tabular format.

User Interfaces

Users can view and download campus space data and floor plans directly from the web via the CSI software platform.

Only Space Management staff can edit CSI at this time. Future enhancements to the CSI software platform include a space survey module in which select campus users will be asked to provide data updates for specific spaces. Additional information about users’ roles in space surveys will be provided at a later date.

To support campus interoperability, the CSI database regularly integrates with other campus systems, including finance and HR (Workday), Physical Plant work management (AssetWorks), and the data warehouse (Badger Analytics).

Management and Support

CSI is managed by the Space Management Office, a unit within Facilities Planning and Management’s Campus Planning and Design Department.

User Support

The Space Management Office performs the following support functions for CSI users.

  • Provides data definitions for proper data understanding and usage
  • Provides access to CSI training via Knowledge Base documentation and videos Using Campus Space Information
  • Provides specialized training as appropriate
  • Responds to the smo@fpm.wisc.edu email questions
  • Supports the development of custom reports as appropriate

User Responsibilities

CSI users are expected to understand and abide by UW-Madison policies related to campus data use and distribution, including but not limited to the following:
