Interactive Reporting - Overview of Clients

The Interactive Reporting service offers three distinct clients to allow users to create and/or run queries. Each client has different levels of functionality and different levels of installation complexity. Interactive Reporting users should use this document to determine the best client option for their situations.

Note: Interactive Reporting, including both the IR Workspace (web) and the Studio Desktop client, will be decommissioned on March 1st, 2019. Neither the web nor the desktop software will be available or supported after this date.

UW-Madison affiliates can find more information on alternative tools on the Office of Data Management and Analytics Services website.

Other UW System affiliates can find additional information, as well as a list of support contacts, on the UWBI Support website.

Which Client Should I Use?

Most Interactive Reporting users do not need to install anything! The HTML client provides all the functionality needed to write a query using an existing data model, display the results, summarize the reports in existing reports, pivots, and charts, and export the results to text, Excel, PDF, etc.

If you need to create data models, which define what tables may be queried against, and what charts, pivots, and reports will be available, then you should use the Web Plug-In. You should also use the web plug-in if you want to publish to the Repository, an online warehouse of queries, whose access can be managed with user permissions.

The standalone (non-Web based) Studio client is only suitable for users that have a collection of queries stored outside of the Repository. These are typically users that have used the standalone client in the past. We urge Studio client users to utilize the Repository for better security and easier client installation. The Studio client requires Oracle Client installed, which is not supported by the Interactive Reporting team.

InfoAccess & HRS EPM Users

InfoAccess users can use the Web Plug-In or the Studio Client. The HTML client cannot be used for InfoAccess. Please contact if you have any questions about accessing InfoAccess via Interactive Reporting, including Oracle Client download and installation support.

Query Library Users

Query Library users need only the HTML Client. No installation needed! If you have any questions regarding using Query Library with Interactive Reporting, please email
