Interactive Reporting - How To's of Data Access
This is an attempt to explain access to data for the primary campus data bases. Contact information for the various data bases is also included.
The largest and most used data bases are InfoAccess (student data), WISDM (financial data), and EPM (HR and payroll data). In addition, the Query Library provides pre-written queries using data from the InfoAccess and EPM data bases.
The Interactive Reporting clients or other query tools such as MS Access may be used to write your own queries directly against a data base. The software for this is installed directly on to the PC. Oracle software and a TNSNames.ora file is also needed. Oracle is the connection software between the PC and the data base and the TNSNames.ora file provides the Oracle server's address for the connection. Interactive Reporting also uses an .oce (Open Catalog Extension) to connect to data bases, and other query tools such as MS Access and Filemaker Pro use ODBC (Open Data Base Connection) and the drivers provided in the Oracle installation.
The IR workspace may be accessed using IE. It provides access to pre-written queries in the Query Library folders as well as other folders established for use by colleges or specialized work areas such as CALS, L&S, SMPH, WiscIt, the Registrar, etc.
This IR workspace also provides access to oce (Open Catalog Extension) direct connections to the data bases mentioned above. These oce connections make it possible to write your own query against these data bases using a web based plug-in. For each of the data bases being accessed through the IR workspace you will find a blank data base document containing the .oce needed for that particular data base.

To request access to other folders stored in the Interactive Reporting workspace, including those used by the Registrar's Office, L&S, SMPH, CALS, and various DoIT folders, contact the DoIT Help Desk.

This file need be edited only for the EPM data base. Open the existing SQLNet.ora file on your computer and delete all file contents. Once the file is empty, add the following two lines:
SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_CLIENT = REQUESTEDSQLNET.CRYPTO_SEED = XXXXXXXX
Where XXXXXXX = users last name
If this is not changed the user will get an SQLNet error message.
Read This First: First Time Query Library Users
The first time when you visit the Query Library Group Membership website (https://querylibrary.wisc.edu/request/home.asp), you will be asked to submit the 'Query Library Agreement'. Please read the terms and select the agreement button. Please also select Yes for one or both of the InfoAccess and Query Library line items (depending upon your specific needs). Only if you select Yes for 'I use the Query Library' will you receive access to the Query Library. Finally, press 'Submit!' to submit your request.
