My Learning Analytics (MyLA) Introductory Announcement

Our class has been invited to participate in a project to learn more about how UW-Madison can support students using data. As part of this tool exploration, you will have access to My Learning Analytics (MyLA), which is a set of three data visualizations designed for students.

What is My Learning Analytics (MyLA)?

  • My Learning Analytics, or MyLA, allows you to check your course performance and view your progress towards learning goals.
  • Here's a brief summary of the three visualizations. Check out this video for a short introduction (9:17 mins): My Learning Analytics Tutorial
  • Three visualizations use data from Canvas which you can use to reflect and make choices about studying for your course, and managing your progress. (Instructors can choose which visualizations to use, so you may not see all three.)
  • This tool was developed at the University of Michigan. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is exploring MyLA in several courses over spring semester to validate how well it works in our data environment and obtain student and instructor feedback on this tool.

What you need to know: timeline & expectations

  • MyLA will be turned on in this course mid-February.
  • This technical review project aligns with UW-Madison’s Learning Analytics Guiding Principles and our Teaching & Learning Data Transparency Statement
  • Please check out the visualizations and experiment with the filters and views; we hope you might spend an hour or two over a 4-week period to explore this tool.
  • You will be asked to provide your feedback in a VERY brief online survey in March. You can continue to access MyLA for the rest of the semester. You will be invited to provide additional feedback.
  • This is important! The Learning Analytics Center of Excellence (LACE) has tested this tool extensively in historic courses. They need to test this tool in live courses, and will be conducting data analysis to find out how well this tool works with our data environment and where it may need to be modified. If you see anything unusual or concerning in the visualizations, please contact LearningAnalytics@office365.wisc.edu with your questions and feedback.

Using MyLA:

Check out this video for a short introduction: My Learning Analytics Tutorial.

You can use the three MyLA views to learn about:

  • the resources (files) you and other students have accessed,
  • upcoming assignments and how your performance on them is related to your grade, and
  • your current grade and the overall grade distribution

Access the visualizations from the navigation on the left side of the Canvas course page. MyLA depends on information in Canvas and related systems. You should always refer to the syllabus or your instructor for assignment and grading information.

  • Here's a brief summary of the three visualizations. Learn more about MyLA on the My Learning Analytics student information page at the University of Michigan.
  • You may not have access to all 3 visualizations, depending on how the course is set up.
  • Kaltura videos and other course resources may not be visible in MyLA; please provide feedback on what you see and don't see. How a course is set up also affects what data may be available.

The goals of this project are to:

  • Allow students and instructors to explore a learning analytics tool, and provide brief feedback about usability and functionality through a very brief online survey.
  • Allow UW-Madison to validate that data is being collected and displayed accurately, as designed, and ensure the configuration works in our data environment.
  • Inform a decision, whether MyLA should be piloted further in upcoming semesters.
