L&S Instruction: Resources, Policies, and Guidance (COVID-19/Fall 2020)

This is page provides an overview of resources, policies, and guidance to support continuity of instruction during the Fall 2020 COVID-19 disruption.

Instructional design resources for remote or hybrid course modalities:

  • L&S Remote Instruction Toolkit: a great resource that includes planning worksheets and tools, topical guides on common remote teaching challenges, downloadable Canvas templates for instructors to quickly build a course, and a technical start-up checklist [added 7/31/2020]

  • Batch leads are assigned departments to help with remote and hybrid instruction challenges [added 7/31/2020]

  • L&S Readiness Criteria for Remote Courses: If you are teaching remotely, please ensure your course meets these criteria [added 7/31/2020]

Scheduled instruction modality for your course

  • The course modality for each class section published schedule; only students who can and will attend in-person should be enrolled in in-person sections. Instructors do not need to (and we do not recommend) offer an in-person section also as “remote-only” to enrolled students. [added 7/31/2020]

Continuity plans for your in-person course

  • Instructors should be prepared for a variety of scenarios, including a mid-semester shift to remote-only instruction or student absences related to illness or quarantine. This page offers more advice and a planning worksheet with example scenarios. [added 7/31/2020]

Accommodations: Supporting individual students who miss class due to illness, quarantined, or bereavement

  • Instructors should continue working with students on alternate methods of completing work if they cannot attend class temporarily because of illness, quarantine, or bereavement. Strategies for accommodations can be found here.

Student-Instructor Building Density Tool

The Student-Instructor Building Density Tool (created by the Office of the Registrar) provides data about the numbers of enrolled students and associated instructors in a building, building floor or particular room at a given day and time. Use this tool to inform your reopening plans. [added 7/31/2020]
