L&S Policy Special Course Fees

This document explains the L&S policy concerning conditions under which special fees may be charged for courses.

L&S follows, in total, the UW System policy on Special Course Fees and UW-Madison Special Course Policy

Before L&S departments fill out the Special Course Fee Request form, they should submit their proposal to Shirin Malekpour, Associate Dean for Teaching & Learning Administration (shirin.malekpour@wisc.edu) for review and pre-approval.
When special course fees are levied, students must be advised of those costs in advance of registration; this notification can be met by including an informational note in the Schedule of Courses after approval is granted.

L&S imposes the following additional conditions that must be met in order to charge a special course fee for L&S courses:
  1. Teaching the course must require an extraordinary cost, well beyond the level that can reasonably be funded by the normal supply and expense budget of the department.
  2. These extraordinary costs cannot be covered as "incidentals" to the course, as described in the UW System policy.
  3. The course clearly cannot be offered without the special charge.

For more information, please contact Shirin Malekpour, Associate Dean for Teaching & Learning Administration (shirin.malekpour@wisc.edu).
