L&S Policy Special Course Fees

This document explains the L&S policy concerning conditions under which special fees may be charged for courses.

L&S follows, in total, the UW System policy on Special Course Fees (formerly General Administrative Policy Paper 29, now UWSAP 825)

Please note that when special course fees are levied, students must be advised of those costs in advance of registration; this notification can be met by including an informational note in the Schedule of Courses after approval is granted.

Section II of the UW System policy describes the situations in which a special course fee may be charged.  L&S imposes the following additional conditions that must be met in order to charge a special course fee:
  1. Teaching the course must require an extraordinary cost, well beyond the level that can reasonably be funded by the normal supply and expense budget of the department.
  2. These extraordinary costs cannot be covered as "incidentals" to the course, as described in the UW System policy.
  3. The course clearly cannot be offered without the special charge.

In dealing with requests for a special course fee, the dean will make a written determination, acting as the designee of the UW-Madison Chancellor under Section II-A of the UW System Policy.

More information about UW-Madison's specific implementation of the Special Course Fee Policy is available through the Business Services site
