Taking ASL to Satisfy the L&S Foreign Language Requirements

The following section is mean for L&S degree-seeking candidates who are interested in using American Sign Language to satisfy his/her BA or BS foreign language requirement.

Students earning their undergraduate degree in the College of Letters & Science are able to use American Sign Language (ASL) to fulfill either their BA or BS foreign language requirement.   Currently UW-Madison does not offer Amercian Sign Language (ASL) coursework that would count toward the L&S foreign language requirement.  Thus, using ASL to satisfy the L&S foreign language requirement is difficult for most students at this time.  The closest school/university in the area offering UW-Madison approved ASL coursework that will count toward the L&S BA or BS foreign language requirement is the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.   Additional information about the UW-Milwaukee courses can be found at American Sign Language Studies

In order for the ASL courses to count toward the L&S BA or BS language requirement, the course would need to transfer back to UW-Madison as the following equivalents:

RP & SE X01 - First Semester ASL
RP & SE X02 - Second Semester ASL
RP & SE X03 - Third Semester ASL
RP & SE X04 - Fourth Semester ASL

Other ASL transfer coursework that does not equate to the equivalents above will not count toward the L&S BA or BS language requirement.  Please make sure you work with the Credit Evaluation Service in the Registrar's Office to determine who this course will transfer back to UW-Madison before enrolling in the course.
