DARSX Exception System
DARSX is an online system used to make exceptions or adjustments to L&S academic requirements as they are reflected on the DARS for individual students.
DARSX provides an accurate depiction of curricular requirements based on the date of matriculation to UW-Madison and declaration of major/certificate program by combining current student information and L&S degree requirement information.
Common types of exceptions include approving a course not currently coded to meet a program requirement, exchanging a required course for another course the student has completed, and in some cases, adjusting the required credits or courses of a specific requirement.
Exceptions to established program requirements should be rare. Exceptions recognize when students meet the same learning objectives as a required course, in an alternate course. Exceptions do not assume that all students taking such an alternate course also meet the learning objectives. Usually, if a course should count for all students, that course should be listed in Guide and coded in DARS to count automatically.
If you find yourself submitting multiple, repetitious exceptions, please contact Academic Information Management (AIM) for consultation. In addition to administering the the DARSX system for L&S use, the staff in AIM can assist departments to obtain governance approval of curriculum changes to be published in Guide and coded in DARS.
Exceptions can only be submitted by authorized parties, using the DARSX online application. To request authorization, download the DARSX Authorization form.pdf -- complete the top portion and have the bottom signed by the program chair or director -- and send it to Mike Pflieger.
Once authorized, use the DARSX User Manual for guidance to use the system.
