Network Drives (Windows) - Connecting to a Network Drive (non-AD)

Follow these steps to connect to a network drive on a non-AD Windows computer.

Before performing these steps, you must know the address of the network drive. On Windows, this address will look something like:
\\lss.drive.wisc.edu\lss
If you do not know the address for your network drive, please contact the TechZone.

  1. If you are off-campus, connect to WiscVPN: WiscVPN - How to Install, Connect, Uninstall, and Disconnect WiscVPN Palo Alto GlobalProtect.
  2. Open Windows Explorer (your file browser).
  3. In the left-hand navigation pane, right-click on This PC.
  4. [Windows 11 only] Select Show more options.
  5. Select Map network drive...
  6. Enter the address of the network drive in the "Folder" field.
  7. Check both Reconnect at sign-in and Connect using different credentials.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. When prompted for your username, enter NetID@ad.wisc.edu. For example, if your NetID is "bbadger," enter bbadger@ad.wisc.edu as your username.
  10. Enter your NetID password.
  11. Check Remember my credentials and click OK.

If you were successful, Windows Explorer will open the network drive. It will appear under "Network locations" in "This PC."

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure you're connected to the internet.
  • Make sure you've typed the server name correctly.
  • Make sure you've entered your NetID credentials correctly. If you'd like to double-check, try logging in to MyUW.
