Laptop and Dock Examples
The images in this article show example laptop and dock setups. The Technical Support team generally recommends such setups over a desktop computer to provide increased flexibility with a laptop while still having a large monitor and other benefits of a desktop.
These are just examples; other configurations are possible.
Docking Monitor with Laptop Closed
This example shows a laptop with its lid closed connected to a docking monitor. The monitor provides USB connections, wired internet, and charging to the laptop through the single cable connection. External keyboard and mouse are used since the laptop is closed. Depending on the laptop, a second monitor may be possible. This is the most common dock setup.
Docking Monitor with Laptop Open
This example shows a laptop with its lid open connected to a docking monitor. As above, the monitor provides USB connections, wired internet, and charging to the laptop through the single cable connection. In this case, no external keyboard and mouse are needed since the laptop's own keyboard and trackpad are available. External keyboard and mouse could still be used if desired.
Separate Dock
This example shows a setup with a separate dock (the black box to the right of the laptop). While this is less common today, it allows for the use of non-docking monitors and provides the same capabilities. In this specific example, there are dual monitors and the laptop lid is closed. External keyboard and mouse are used since the laptop is closed.
