Register your Student Organization

Every academic year, student groups must register their organization with the Center for Leadership & Involvement (CfLI) to become a Registered Student Organization (RSO). Registration must be completed each year to access benefits and be recognized by the Law School.

Registration Timeline for 2024-2025

  • Monday, July 8, 2024 at 10:00am (central time) - Registration forms open for Dual Registration groups, including Law School groups who were registered in the 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 10:00am (central time) - Registration forms open for all student organizations and new organizations.
  • Friday, October 11, 2024 - Freeze Day - Any organizations who have not completed registration will lose access to benefits. This includes campus benefits as listed on CfLI's website, and Law School benefits such as lockers, bulletin boards, and space reservations.
  • Friday, May 2, 2025 - Last day to complete 2024-2025 registration. RSOs who complete registration between July 8, 2024 and May 2, 2025 will retain full recognition and access to benefits until October of 2025.

For re-registering groups

The registration application is accessed on your Wisconsin Involvement Network (WIN) profile. Any member of your RSO that is listed on your group's WIN roster can access the application using the following directions:

  1. Log into WIN with your NetID.
  2. Click on the RSO you want to register under "Memberships" on the home page.
  3. Click on "Manage Organization" in the top right corner.
  4. Click on the blue button that says "Re-Register this Organization" to open the application.

Please note that whoever accesses and submits the application for your RSO will be designated as the Primary Contact upon approval of the application. CfLI processes only one application chair per RSO, so please communicate among your leadership to ensure that only one person is taking complete responsibility for the application, and that the student doing so is enrolled at least half-time at UW-Madison.

RSOs that were registered during the 2023-2024 academic year will retail RSO privileges through October 11th, 2024. After that date, if the RSO has not yet submitted and received approval of their application for 2024-2025 year, the group will enter frozen status, losing their campus and Law School recognition as an RSO and access to RSO benefits.

Law School student organizations are considered "dual-registered" and therefore have early access to the registration application each year. To take advantage of this, we strongly encourage you to complete the application process prior to August 1st to ensure it is reviewed before another 500+ RSOs gain access to the application. During August and September, there are high volumes of applications and it can take up to 5 weeks for review. The turn around time is usually much shorter in July, but can still take up to 3 weeks. To allow for processing time and any necessary re-submissions, please work to submit this application as soon as you can.

Please note that RSOs are required to upload a copy of their constitution/bylaws in the registration application every three years, but have the option to submit new documents at any time. Law School organizations will be required to review and upload their constitution/bylaws in the 2025-2026 registration period. For details on requirements for constitutions/bylaws, please see the Student Organization Resource & Policy Guide. For assistance reviewing and updating your RSO's constitution/bylaws, please contact the Student Life & Engagement Manager via email (carlie.wiseley@wisc.edu) or by scheduling an appointment via Starfish.

For new or previously inactive groups

If you would like to start a new student organization or re-activate an organization, any student who is at least half-time enrolled may do so by following the steps below:

  1. First check the Law School RSO Directory to make sure the organization does not already exist.
  2. Check the Inactive Organizations list to see if the group exists, but did not register last year. If the group is listed on the Inactive Organizations list, you should complete this WIN form to re-activate the profile. The benefit of re-activating a profile is that you will gain access to past governing documents that may help you structure your RSO, and you may have name recognition among other law students and staff. If you're unsure if you should start a new RSO or Re-Activate an RSO, please contact the Student Life & Engagement Manager (carlie.wiseley@wisc.edu) for guidance.
  3. If you decide to start a new organization, visit the RSO Directory in WIN. Click on Register an Organization and complete the steps on the next screen to access the application.
  4. If you would like your organization to be recognized by the Law School and have access to Law School benefits (lockers, bulletin boards, Law School space reservations, etc.) you must meet with the Student Life & Engagement Manager. Please schedule an appointment via Starfish.

Please note that new organizations are eligible to register beginning August 1.

For more information and guidance please review the Student Organization Resource & Policy Guide's Registration 101 page or reach out to CfLI at cfli@studentaffairs.wisc.edu or 608.263.0365.
