Guide: Borrowing Content

This document provides instructions on borrowing content from one tab to another tab.

Borrowing Content

Borrowing content allows you use the entire content of one tab and apply it to another tab. In this relationship, you would only need to update one source and the rest of the locations that borrow that content will also be updated. Examples of where borrowing content might be useful could include: sharing faculty lists between departments and major/certs, sharing information between BA and BS pages, or sharing information between the Masters and Doctoral levels of the Guide.

  1. Verify that the information in the tab is accurate.

  2. Navigate to the page where you want to populate the shared data. For example: the “How to Get In” information on a BA tab is the EXACT same for the BS page’s tab.

Edit page navigation

  1. Click the “Insert/Edit Formatted Table”

  1. Select “Borrowed Content” from the drop-down list.

  1. Click “OK”

  2. A new box will open.  Select the Pathway to the content that you want to borrow.

Select the “Select Path or Title”.

It’s easiest to type in what page (url) you want to pull from, but you can scroll through the list.

Once you’ve selected the page (url) you want to pull from, you need to select the tab where the content resides that you’d like to borrow.  If you click “OK” before selecting the tab it will default to the “overview/page body” content.

Once you’ve selected the correct tab, click “OK”

Once you click “OK” the content pulls from the tab that you’ve selected and should look like this:

Click “OK” to save changes.

Important Note:

When making changes on the main page, content will populate to the borrowed content pages.  This is not immediate, but if you want to see the changes immediately, it can be manually updated on the tab that is borrowing content by clicking the “Edit ‘...’” and then clicking “OK”.

Deleting Borrowed Content

If a tab had been previously set-up to borrow content and you wish you no longer maintain the “borrowed” relationship, you can removed the borrowed content set-up on the page that receives the borrowed content.

  1. Edit the tab you want to delete the content from.

  1. SINGLE Click on the box where the borrowed/shared content exists.

  1. Click “delete” on your keyboard.

  2. Click “OK” in the edit box.

Finding Borrowed Content

If a tab had been previously set-up to borrow content and you wish to find the parent page, follow these instructions:

  1. Edit the tab you want to delete the content from.

  1. Double click on the box where the borrowed/shared content exists.

  1. The url location is listed in the top box. In this example, it is located in the undergraduate part of the Guide, in the College of Letters & Science, in the Department of Music. If you want to navigate to the page the content is borrowed from, open a new browser window and type next-guide.wisc.edu and then paste the rest of the URL in. Example: next-guide.wisc.edu/undergraduate/letters-science/music/index.html

4. The Tab in which the content displays under the url. In this example, the shared content lives on the "people" tab. To edit this content, navigate to the department page and then edit the people tab. NOTE: The content will update once the system is refreshed OR you edit the tab where the borrowed content displays.
