Lumen Programs: Fixing 'Red-box' Courses
A how-to go about updating curricular requirements due to red-box courses. A red-box course can be a result of a discontinuation, course number change, or course subject change.
Help! There's a red-box around a course in my curriculum. How do I fix this? What happened to the course that was there?
A red-box around a course is an indication that something major has changed about a course, primarily a subject change, catalog number change, or an inactivation (discontinuation). A course that falls into the category of obsolete courses (inactivation/discontinuation) may produce an unexpected red-box in curriculum.
There are a couple tools available to figure out what has happened to a course:
- Lumen Courses
- Course Catalog (located in the Student Information System - SIS)
- Course Dashboards
All courses inactivation/discontinuations will be done through Lumen Courses. The obsolete course process is done in Lumen Courses, so at any given time the status of an obsolete course is findable until it has been removed from the system. Inactivated courses due to the obsolete course process will only stay in the system until the spring semester of their inactivation. Following the course number re-use policy, once they are approved and able to be removed from the system they will be to allow the number to be re-used.
An inactivated course will have a status of 'deleted', which can be sorted by clicking on the 'Status' bar, or by selecting 'Deactivated Courses', 'Deactivated & In Workflow', or 'Obsolete Course' from the drop down filter. Any course that is discontinued separately from the obsolete course process will remain in a 'deleted' status for eight years.
You can also search by the subject short name (also referenced as "subject short descr") and the course catalog number in the search field. Note: only the official SIS subject short name will pull up an entire subject listing. For example: to pull up subject Medical Microbiology and Immunology use "M M & I" instead of "MMI".

For individuals who have access to the Student Information System (SIS), the course catalog is the source of truth in perpetuity.
Navigation to the Course Catalog: Main Menu > Curriculum Management > Course Catalog > Course Catalog
It's easiest to search for a course by using Course ID, but having the subject code (number) and the catalog number are also acceptable ways to find a course.
Once a course has been identified, there are two places to look to see the status of a course:
The course status (at the top in the red box) will tell you the current state of the course. Under course attributes, it will tell you if the course has been inactivated due to the obsolete course process. If it has not been inactivated due to the obsolete course process, it should be findable in Lumen Courses. If the course is still active, you will need to look at the course offering to see if the subject changed, a cross-list was dropped, or the catalog number changed.
In the above example, there are seven cross-listed owners of this course and any one of them will link in Lumen Programs. This is the area where you can see if the course number or subject has changed.
