Learn@UW/D2L - Exporting Quiz Scores to a CSV File Could Trigger an Internal Server Error

This document describes how to handle the problem if you receive an Internal Server Error when attempting to export the scores for a quiz to a CSV file.

If you attempt to export quiz scores to a CSV file using the Export to CSV button ( Export to CSV ) and receive an Internal Server (HTML 500) Error, the problem could be either of the following:

  • There are Null Attempt Scores

    If one or more students has a null overall attempt score, an Internal Server (HTML 500) Error is triggered.

    It is unusual but possible for the scores for a quiz attempt that has been submitted to contain null data.

    The instructor should select 'Grade Quiz' for the quiz and look for null scores.

    Grading the quiz attempts manually for attempts with null scores so they contain actual quiz scores resolves the problem. The quiz scores can then be exported to a CSV file.

  • The Amount of Data is Very Large

    If the overall number of attempts and quiz questions are large, the data may contain more cells than Microsoft Excel can handle.

    A possible workaround is to use quiz reports which can be partitioned into sections by date ranges. You may be able to export each section separately as a CSV file.
