Learn@UW/D2L - Options For Exporting Courses From D2L

There are several ways to export courses from Learn@UW (D2L), including exporting course components, using the bulk course export process (commonly known as BCE), and utilizing the Data Purge Tool. Please consider these options and choose the one that best suits your needs, which may vary. This document should shed some clarity on which option to use in which circumstance.

Export course components:

This option will work best for those who will be continuing to teach the same course in Canvas or another LMS. If they need the same content, quizzes, dropboxes, etc. in their new course, this option will allow them to export those components in a fashion that makes importing easier. Please note that the output does not include student-generated data.

Who can do this? Instructors and Administrators are able to perform this function.

Note: UW System Administration provides additional information about migrating course content on a different web site (see

Bulk course export:

This option will work best for courses that fail when using export course components, for exporting particularly large courses, or for exporting several courses at once. Please note that the output does not include student generated data.

Who can do this? This function is only available to Administrators.

D2L Data Purge Tool:

This option will work best for exporting course materials, including student data, for archival purposes only. The output is not importable into Canvas.

Who can do this? This function is only available to Administrators.
