UDOIT - Getting Started

This document is intended for new users of UDOIT, a course accessibility checker

Universal Design Online content Inspection Tool or UDOIT (pronounced, “You Do It”), is a course accessibility checker that allows instructors to scan an entire Canvas course to identify  and help resolve accessibility issues, referred to as “barriers.”

Instructor Considerations

  • UDOIT is a third-party tool that scans most areas of your Canvas course for accessibility barriers.

  • Once the scan is complete, UDOIT will provide an interface to assist instructors in making changes to help alleviate these barriers.

  • Although the tool does provide a way to fix some barriers directly inside the tool, there are some barriers that may require some direct editing of the HTML of the area in the course.

  • UDOIT also checks course files. These files will require knowledge of how to make the changes in the software or programs that created the files.

  • UDOIT is available to all credit and non-credit courses within Canvas.

Using UDOIT for the First Time

  • UDOIT appears on by default in each course’sCanvas Navbar. Review the document Enabling UDOIT in Canvas for step-by-step instructions on enabling UDOIT in a Canvas course.

  • Instructors and Course Designers access UDOIT from the left side navigation bar. The UDOIT area is not visible to students.

  • When you first open the tool, it will automatically scan your course for accessibility barriers.

  • UDOIT is a teaching and learning tool centrally supported by the Learn@UW-Madison team. For technical support questions, instructors should contact the DoIT Help Desk

Best Practices and Use Cases

  • UDOIT presents barriers based on a few criteria. Instructors should start with the “Easiest to Fix” barriers in order to get used to the tool and its functionality.

  • The barriers will be presented in two categories: errors and suggestions. Errors should be the first ones to be addressed.

  • If the tool cannot fix the issue natively, it will give you a link to the page for you to correct.

  • If you are unsure how to edit HTML, please work with your local support or a knowledgeable colleague.

Pricing

  • UW-Madison has an institutional license for UDOIT for all courses. UDOIT is available without additional costs to UW-Madison students, staff and faculty.
