Canvas - Getting Started with Canvas New Quizzes [UW-Madison]

This document describes Canvas New Quizzes and provides links to additional resources about New Quizzes.

   

What is New Quizzes?

  • New Quizzes is a new assessment and quiz tool in Canvas. Differing from the original, “Classic” Canvas Quiz tool, New Quizzes include a series of feature enhancements and new item types

Getting Started With New Quizzes

Enabling New Quizzes in Your Course

  1. Select Settings at the bottom of the course navigation menu.

  2. Select the Feature Options tab.

  3. Next to the New Quizzes feature, click the red X  then select Enabled
    A red X button is selected beside "new quizzes". A menu is open with "enabled" and "disabled", and "enabled" is highlighted.

  4. The red X will change to a green check, showing that New Quizzes is now enabled.

Choose Between Classic and New Quizzes

When creating a quiz, you will be asked to select between Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes.

  1. To choose, go to make a new quiz by clicking the +Quiz button on the Quizzes page.

  2. A window will appear, and ask you to select either Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes.
    The window is titled "choose a quiz engine", and there is a hyperlink where you can learn more about each. New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes are the available options

  • Classic Quizzes is the quiz tool that has been available since our transition to Canvas. The tool is being phased out by Instructure (however, Instructure has not set an end-of-life date).

  • New Quizzes is the newer engine with more question types and quiz setting functionality.

Building a Quiz in New Quizzes

  1. After selecting New Quizzes you will see a standard Assignment page. Fill out the details as far as points, assignment group etc. Then when you are ready to add questions to the quiz, click on Build in the lower right corner.

  2. After clicking Build you will see a screen with a white cross in a blue button in the middle of the screen. Simply click on this button to add a question.
    The Build page shows a blue plus sign (+) button, which is highlighted here.

  3. This will open a dialogue box of the different question types you can choose from.
    After selecting the aformentioned blue plus (+), there's a list of question types that you can add.

  4. Add as many questions as desired using the white checkmark in the blue circle. Once you are done, click the Return button in the top right corner. You can go back and edit the quiz and add questions at any time by simply clicking on the quiz name and selecting Build.
