Gradescope - Grading Assignments [UW-Madison]

Gradescope Rosters are not synced with Canvas automatically. If you do not sync your Gradescope course with Canvas you could potentially miss removing students who dropped or miss students who were added to the course. For additional assistance on Gradescope Roster Sync, that can be found here.

This document explains the grading process for Gradescope. Namely: how to grade assignments and how to post grades.

Grading submissions

  1. Navigate to canvas.wisc.edu and open your course.

  2. Select Assignments in the left sidebar
Assignments, as displayed on the Canvas nav menu

  3. Select your assignment to open it in Gradescope.

  4. Select Grade Submissions in the left sidebar of Gradescope to start grading.
The Gradescope nav menu shows a "Grade Submissions" button

  5. The process for grading depends on the type of assignment you created. For more details, see one of the Gradescope Guides below:

  6. Once you've finished grading, see Posting Grades, later in this document.

Posting grades

  1. Verify that you've synced your roster and linked your assignments before attempting to post grades.

  2. When you've finished grading submissions, Gradescope will open the Grading Dashboard for the assignment.

  3. Open the left sidebar in Gradescope and select Review Grades.

  4. Open the More menu on the bottom taskbar Post Grades to Canvas button. A new window will appear, where you can confirm whether to post grades.
The "Post Grades to Canvas" option is available on the Gradescope menu

  5. In the menu that opens, select Post Grades.

Note: Posting Grades to Canvas only sends the raw scores to Canvas. Students will not be able to view their graded submissions, question-by-question scores, rubrics, or feedback in Gradescope until grades are published.

  • For fully graded submissions: only the overall score will be posted to your Canvas Gradebook. These assignments will have a checkmark (✓) next to them on the Review Grades page in Gradescope.

  • For ungraded or partially graded submissions: When you post grades to Canvas, a dash (-) displays next to ungraded submissions and an alert (!) icon next to any partially graded submissions.

  1. Select Publish Grades if you want students to see their graded, annotated submissions, question-by-question scores, rubrics, and feedback on Gradescope.

  2. Select Compose Email to Students at the bottom of the Review Grades page, if you would like to notify students.
