Kaltura - Options to Allow Viewers to Download Media and Downloading Your Own Media [UW-Madison]

This document describes how to allow viewers to download your video, or for you to download your own videos from Kaltura MediaSpace.

Allow users to download your video by using the download player

The default Kaltura MediaSpace player does not allow viewers to download media. The Kaltura MediaSpace download player lets viewers download the original video you uploaded to Kaltura MediaSpace. Instructors can choose to use the download player in Canvas by following  Canvas - Upload and Embed a New Kaltura Mediaspace Video in a Canvas Page [UW-Madison] . Users who want to embed their media elsewhere with the download player can use embed code. Please do not use the download functionality with copyrighted media:

  1. Launch Chrome or Firefox and go to Kaltura MediaSpace: mediaspace.wisc.edu. Login by clicking Guest and selecting Login from the drop-down menu. If you need more information on how to log in to MediaSpace please see Kaltura - How to Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace [UW-Madison] .
  2. Click on your name or the person silhouette icon in the upper right corner and click My Media.
  3. Search for or scroll until you find the video you want to embed. Click on the media’s thumbnail.
  4. Click the Share tab located under the media player.
  5. Click the Embed tab located between the Link to Media Page and oEmbed tabs.
  6. Select a player that has the download option enabled by clicking the radio button next to player preview. The most popular player to use is the Main + Download (25916071) player.
  7. You can then copy the "Embed Code" and paste it in your own site. For information on how to use embed code in your website, please see the documentation for your website.

Provide viewers more download options in Kaltura MediaSpace

As the owner or co-editor of media, you can provide your viewers with a download tab on the media page in Kaltura MediaSpace and determine what quality of video your users can download. To enable this functionality:

  2. Click on your name or the person silhouette icon in the upper right corner and click My Media:

  3. Search for or scroll until you find the video you want to edit. Click on the media’s Edit button which looks like a pencil. If you do not see the "Edit" option, you are not the owner of the media and/or do not have co-editor permissions. You can request co-editor permissions by contacting the media owner.
  4. Click the Downloads tab.
  5. Select the check boxes next to the format of video you would like your viewers to be able to download:

  6. After you are satisfied with your selections, click the Save button.
  7. The message "The information was saved successfully" will appear under the Save button in a green dialog box.
  8. To verify that your viewers will be provided with a "Download" button, navigate to the media page, by clicking the Go To Media link located next to the Save button.
  9. Once on the media page, the Download tab appears under the media player between the Details and Share tabs:

Access to the video and download tab is controlled by the publishing options. For details on this process see Kaltura - How to Change Publication Settings to Media in Kaltura MediaSpace [UW-Madison] . Be aware that unlisted media links are available to anyone and can be shared. However for a user to see the download tab, they need to first login to Kaltura MediaSpace. If the browser window is narrow, it will be selectable under the Details drop down menu. The user can select the download button next to the format they want to download. Download formats will only display for those that are available. In this example the uploaded video was 720p. Even though the owner selected 1080p as available for download, the video didn't have that quality available and thus doesn't display as an option. Be careful not to use the download functionality with copyrighted media.

How the owner of a video can download the original file

We recommend that users keep a copy of any video they upload to Kaltura MediaSpace. However if you need to download a copy of a video you uploaded you can follow these steps:

  3. Search for or scroll until you find the video you want to edit. Click on the media’s Edit button which looks like a pencil. If you do not see the "Edit" option, you are not the owner of the media and/or do not have co-editor permissions. You can request co-editor permissions by contacting the media owner.
  4. You should now be on the Edit page. The player on this page has a download button enabled in the upper right of the video. Once clicked, it will provide you with the original, uploaded media file:
