Kaltura - MediaSpace video editing tools [UW-Madison]

This document outlines how to access and use the Video Editing Tools in Kaltura MediaSpace.

The Kaltura video editing tools provide basic online video editing. Users may find it quicker and more reliable to use locally installed video editing software like Camtasia or Adobe Premiere. Locally installed video editing software also allow much more fine-grained control and advanced editing functions. The Kaltura editor is more prone to issues with longer duration videos (over 20 min). The current release of the video editing tools supports the following features:

Prerequisite:

You must be the owner or co-editor of the media to use Kaltura Video Editing Tools, or create clips of media entries.

Launching the Kaltura Video Editing Tools

  1. Launch Chrome or Firefox and go to Kaltura MediaSpace: mediaspace.wisc.edu. If you need more information on how to log in to MediaSpace please see Kaltura - How to Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace [UW-Madison] .

  2. Click on your name or the person silhouette icon in the upper right corner and click My Media:

  3. Option 1: Search for or scroll until you find the video you want to edit.
    1. Click on the media’s Edit button which looks like a pencil:

    2. Click the Launch Editor button:

  4. Option 2: Search for or scroll until you find the video you want to edit.
    1. Click on the video thumbnail from the My Media page.
    2. Select Launch Editor from the Actions drop down menu:

  5. The Kaltura Editor window is displayed.

Overview of Kaltura MediaSpace Video Editor Tools

  1. Quiz tab - Use the Quiz tool to create a Kaltura Interactive Video Quiz (IVQ). More information on how to create video quizzes is available in Kaltura - Adding questions to your videos with Kaltura video quizzes [UW-Madison] .
  2. Editor tab - Use the editor tool to split a clip, or change the in or out point of a clip.
  3. Hotspots tab (Coming at some point) - UW-Madison will enable the Hotspots tool if Kaltura addresses some accessibility issues with the tool.
  4. Help tab - Use the Help tool to get a click to the user manual, turn on tooltips, and see accessibility keyboard shortcuts.
  5. Exit - Exit the video editor and return to Kaltura MediaSpace.

  6. Open/close left pane: The left pane of the editor window displays media details and can be opened or closed by clicking the button.
  7. Basic information on the name of the media item, the creator,and the last time it was updated.
  8. Real Time Marker, with Quick Action and Time Code
    • Split - Use to cut your segment at the selected point.
    • Set In - Use to set an "in" point on your timeline.
    • Set Out - Use to set cue points on your time line.
  9. Delete - Use to cut the selected segment
  10. Fade In/Out - Use to set fade in/out cue points on your select segment.
  11. Timeline - Each "box" shows a still frame of the video at that point in time. The blue shaded area indicates the audio level at that point in time.
  12. Reset - Resets the timeline to its last saved state.
  13. Redo - Retracts to the last action you performed on the timeline.
  14. Undo - Undoes the last action you performed on the timeline.
  15. Show/Hide Audio - (Note that if you hover over the button it says "Select Audio" but this looks to be a mistake) - This button will show or hide the audio level from the timeline.
  16. Zoom Control - You can either click "zoom in" (the two triangles) or "zoom out" (the one triangle) to change the level of granularity you see on the timeline. You can also drag the
  17. Play buttons -
    • Jump to start - Jumps the video back to the beginning. The real time marker will move to the far left.
    • Play - Plays the video back. The real time marker will move along the timeline in accordance with where the video is.
    • Jump to end - Jumps the video to the very end. The real time marker will move to the far right.
  18. Save - Saves any edits you've made to the video clip.
  19. Save a Copy - Saves any edits you've made into a new clip for your Kaltura MediaSpace library.
