New Quizzes Pilot [UW-Madison]

This document discusses the Canvas New Quizzes tool, how to set up a new quiz, and the new tool’s limitations.

Welcome to the New Quizzes Pilot at UW-Madison (for those not in the New Quizzes pilot, you can find information about “Classic” Quizzes here)

Choosing a Quiz Engine

As part of the pilot, you will be asked to select between Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes.

  1. To choose, go to make a new quiz by clicking the +Quiz button on the Quizzes page.
Select the "+Quiz" button to add a quiz
  2. A window will appear, and ask you to select either Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes.
A "Choose a Quiz Engine" appears, with the option to pick New Quizzes or Classic Quizzes.
  • Classic Quizzes is the quiz tool that has been available since our transition to Canvas. The tool is being phased out by Instructure (however, Instructure has not set an end-of-life date).

  • New Quizzes is a modern quizzing engine with more question types and quiz setting functionality. You will be piloting New Quizzes this semester.

For a detailed comparison of features between Classic and New Quizzes, refer to the Canvas New Quizzes vs Classic quizzes comparison chart.

Building a Quiz in New Quizzes

  1. After selecting New Quizzes you will see a standard Assignment page. Fill out the details as far as points, assignment group etc. Then when you are ready to add questions to the quiz, click on Build in the lower right corner.
    Select the "Build" button

  2. After clicking Build you will see a screen with a white cross in a blue button in the middle of the screen. Simply click on this button to add a question.
    Select "Add"

  3. This will open a dialogue box of the different question types you can choose from.
    Insert Content

  4. Add as many questions as desired using the white checkmark in the blue circle. Once you are done, click the Return button in the top right corner. You can go back and edit the quiz and add questions at any time by simply clicking on the quiz name and selecting Build.

Understanding Limitations of New Quizzes

Instructure continues to add new features to New Quizzes. However, some limitations remain:

  • There are some fairly significant accessibility issues with New Quizzes including with screen readers, keyboard navigation, and some of the newer question types (like Hot-Spot questions).

  • New Quizzes does not have a direct option to create a survey-type quiz; however, you can configure the settings in New Quizzes to behave like the survey-type quiz in Classic Quizzes.

  • You cannot change from New Quizzes to Classic Quizzes or vice versa once you have selected an engine for an individual quiz. You can choose a different engine (New or Classic) for the next quiz you create.

  • People enrolled in the course as Designers cannot edit New Quizzes.

Understanding expectations moving forward with New Quizzes

Feel free to begin building assessments using New Quizzes. Eventually, New Quizzes will replace Classic Quizzes; there will be more communication on that transition once the timeline is fully established.
