Kaltura - Downloading Media (UW-Madison)

This document describes the contexts in which media can be downloaded within Kaltura MediaSpace.

There are four places within Kaltura MediaSpace in which media can be downloaded. Where you can download depends on your relationship with the media. If you are an owner or co-editor, you can download in more places than when you are a viewer.

Download Original File

As an owner or co-editor of media in Kaltura MediaSpace, you can download the original media file that you uploaded or created. This can be done by following this procedure:

  1. Launch Chrome or Firefox and go to Kaltura MediaSpace: mediaspace.wisc.edu. Login by clicking Guest and selecting Login from the drop-down menu. If you need more information on how to log in to MediaSpace please see Kaltura - How to Log in to Kaltura MediaSpace (UW-Madison) .
  2. Click on your name or the person silhouette icon in the upper right corner and click My Media:

  3. Search for or scroll until you find the video you want to edit. Click on the media’s Edit button which looks like a pencil. If you do not see the "Edit" option, you are not the owner of the media and/or do not have co-editor permissions. You can request co-editor permissions by contacting the media owner.
  4. You should now be on the Edit page. The player on this page has a download button enabled. Once clicked, it will provide you with the original, uploaded media file:

If you don't see the download button you may also want to increase the width of your browser window or try zooming in and out with Control - or Control +.

Provide Viewers Download Button on Media Page

As the owner or co-editor of media, you can provide your viewers with a download button on the media page. Using this functionality, you can determine what quality of video your users can download. To enable this functionality:

  1. Follow steps one and two under Download Original File to get to the "Edit Media" page.
  2. Click the Downloads tab.
  3. Select the check boxes next to the format of video you would like your viewers to be able to download:

  4. After you are satisfied with your selections, click the Save button.
  5. The message "The information was saved successfully" will appear under the Save button in a green dialog box.
  6. To verify that your viewers will be provided with a "Download" button, navigate to the media page, by clicking the Go To Media link located next to the Save button.
  7. Once on the media page, the Download tab appears under the media player between the Details and Share tabs:
A screenshot showing the "Download" tab or option available to a user once the media owner enables downloads for a media item.
If the browser window is narrow, it will be selectable under the Details drop down menu. The user can select the download button next to the format they want to download. Download formats will only display for those that are available. In this example the uploaded video was 720p. Even though the owner selected 1080p as available for download, the video didn't have that quality available and thus doesn't display as an option. Be careful not to use the download functionality with copyrighted media.

Embed Media in External Site Using Player with Download Functionality

If you do not direct your viewers to media pages within Kaltura MediaSpace but instead use an external site (e.g. Departmental website, KnowledgeBase document, etc.), you can also provide your viewers with the option to download your media. Note that instructors can now embed Kaltura media in a Canvas course using the Kaltura-Canvas integration described in Canvas - How to add or embed a video in your Canvas course using Kaltura Media (UW-Madison) . Please do not use the download functionality with copyrighted media.

  2. Click on your name or the person silhouette icon in the upper right corner and click My Media.
