Advanced Content Authoring and Reporting - Using interactive Storyline modules with WordPress/GrassBlade, Learning Locker, and Canvas

This document outlines the process of using Storyline modules with the advanced content authoring and reporting solution. It includes information on how to upload your module to WordPress, embed it in Canvas, setup grade passback to Canvas, and how to request reports. It is for instructors who need access to more detailed information on how students use their Storyline modules - how they answered specific questions for example. This is a reasonably complex solution. It will be of interest to technically inclined instructors or instructors who have local learning technology support staff to support them with this process and for whom using a SCORM module with Canvas won't meet their need.


Articulate Storyline is an interactive content authoring software for Windows only. 50 Articulate 360 Teams licenses have been purchased with Canvas project funding until May 10, 2019. Licenses can be requested via the Articulate 360 Teams Licenses form. Storyline licenses will likely need to be purchased by departments after May 10, 2019.

Storyline is an option for creating critical reader modules but is better suited for creating case scenarios -where the student takes a role and makes decisions applying things they've learned in class and gets feedback on the choices they've made.

Separate from the advanced content authoring and reporting solution, Storyline projects can be packaged as a SCORM module and uploaded to Canvas directly. SCORM is a standard governing how online learning content and Learning Management Systems (LMs) communicate with each other. Using Storyline modules published with SCORM is simpler than the process described below for the content authoring solution - it requires fewer steps. SCORM modules in Canvas have a few downsides however:

  • SCORM reports are not available on more detailed student usage of a module - for example you can not see information on how a student answered a particular question.
  • Users can retake SCORM assignments in Canvas multiple times.
  • Only a student's most recent attempt of a SCORM assignment is stored by Canvas.
  • If a student re-enters a SCORM assignment and doesn't complete it, their score will be reset to 0.

The content authoring solution uses Storyline projects published with xAPI with a suite of tools with  to store more detailed information on how students use interactive modules and send a grade to the Canvas gradebook. xAPI is a specification that makes it possible to collect data about a wide range of experiences a student has and allows multiple technology systems to communicate with each other.


  • General support Storyline will be provided by the vendor (Articulate). Storyline is not supported as a central service by campus.
  • DoIT Academic Technology (DoIT AT) provides documentation and online training (coming soon) to assist faculty and staff in setting up the integrations. School, college and department instructional technologists will be responsible for providing any additional end-user support - beyond the documentation and online training - to set up and use the integrations.
