Canvas - Test Student Accounts [UW-Madison]

This document describes how to create test student accounts in Canvas.

   

What Is a test student account?

Some instructors request test students so they can review how their Canvas course appears to actual students. 

Instructors usually need this to test something that isn’t possible with the Canvas Test Student View, such as submitting an assignment of viewing content in an LTI.

How do I request a test student account?

Instructors can request test accounts by contacting the DoIT Help Desk or by emailing learnuwsupport@wisc.edu. Please include your name, NetID, and any courses you’d like the test student to access. There is a limit of three test accounts per instructor.

How do I access my test student account?

Your Login

When the Learn@UW-Madison team creates your account, they will send you an email with your login information. Your login typically is [your NetID].test (example: bbadger.test), unless you have multiple test student accounts.

Login Site

Test accounts do not log in to canvas.wisc.edu. There is a separate login page for these accounts.

Logging in

To log into your test account once you receive the password reset email:

  1. When Learn@UW-Madison creates your test account, they contact you with your login information, and a prompt to reset your password.
  2. Please make sure you are logged out of Canvas, and all Canvas tabs are closed (this is to make sure you aren't logged into your NetID account)
  3. Click the reset password link on the email.
  4. Enter the new password and select the update password button.
  5. After you set a password, you can use this login site to access your test student account (This is the only login site that will work for test accounts).
  6. Enter the login provided in the email, and the password you just chose.
  7. Once you log into your Test Student account, the requested courses will be on your dashboard. If you’d like to add your Test Student to more courses, contact Learn@UW Support.

Requesting a password reset

If you have forgotten your password for your test student account:

  1. Navigate to the login site, and select forgot password
  2. On the next page, enter your Login ID and submit. This will send an email to the address associated with your Login ID; (typically [your netid]@wisc.edu).

  3. Once you receive the password reset email, completely log out of Canvas before opening the password reset link.
  4. Open the link and enter the password into the provided fields.

Note: Password resets often take more than 30 minutes to arrive.
