SoE Windows Computer - First Time Setup

A user experience guide for the first time logging into a new Windows computer in the School of Education

The guide will only apply in two scenarios:

  1. This is the first time you are logging into a new Windows computer support by MERIT
  2. You have recently changed your NetID password and you are off campus or remote

Laptops

  1. Power on the laptop and wait until you see the Windows login screen
  2. Click on the Wi-Fi button in the bottom right

    1. If you are on campus, click on eduroam and login with your NetID like this:
      1. Username: NetID@wisc.edu
      2. Password: your NetID password

    2. If you are off campus or remote, click on your home Wi-Fi network and connect with your password

  3. Follow these instructions to connect to the VPN before you login to the laptop: https://kb.wisc.edu/merit/148789

  4. Enter your NetID and password and click login

Desktops

  1. Click anywhere on the screen or press any button on your keyboard to bring up the login screen
  2. Enter your NetID and password and click login

 Your computer comes with a suite of software pre-installed. If you need additional software, first check the app catalog for campus supported versions. If you need additional software not pre-installed or found in the app catalog, contact MERIT at helpdesk@education.wisc.edu.
