Microsoft 365 - Backup OneDrive for Business data
If your affiliation with UW-Madison is changing and you have received notification that you will lose access to certain features/applications to your M365 account, please make sure to review the information below regarding your OneDrive storage space and take the necessary steps to save your stored data before you loose access to it.
The data stored in OneDrive for Business online will need to be backed up and saved to another location, or it will be permanently lost. Download the data that you currently have stored in OneDrive for Business.
Please note, these instructions are for users who access OneDrive for Business via a web browser. If you have access to the desktop version of Microsoft Office, you may have additional options to back up your data.
OneNote/Class Notebooks
For users who only want a copy of their notes, you can copy/paste the text into another text editing application:
- Log into Outlook on the web.
- Go to the app launcher and select OneDrive.
- Open each OneNote/Class Notebook and copy/paste the data into a text file.
- Save the text file(s) into the desired location.
Another option (not supported by UW-Madison M365 support team) for Notebooks is to export the data - review Illinois State University resource.
All other file types
- Log into Outlook on the web.
- Go to the app launcher and select OneDrive.
- For each file in each folder, right-click and select Download. Repeat this for all your files. Alternatively, if you want every file in a foler, you can right click the folder and select download.
- The files will be placed in the default download location used by your browser. Open this location and move the files to the desired destination.
