Using Sift & Winnow: Libraries@UW with moodle.

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

How to add Sift & Winnow modules to classes.

About Sift & Winnow: Libraries@UW

Sift & Winnow: Libraries@UW is a comprehensive information literacy tutorial developed by UW-Madison Libraries in partnership with UW-Madison DoIT Academic Technology and funded by a UW-Madison Educational Innovation grant.

Using Sift & Winnow in a moodle course.

To add a Sift & Winnow module to a moodle course, first add an External Tool activity:

Then click the "show more..." link to show the advanced configuration options.

And enter the information as follows:
  • Activity name:  Sift & Winnow Module 1              (For module 1)
  • Launch URL:
  • Custom parameters:  module_id=1           (For module 1)

Finally click "Save and Display" at the bottom.  If everything went well, you'll see Sift & Winnow module 1 displayed and available to your students.

Next add the remaining Sift & Winnow modules to the course in the same way.  As of August 2015, there are six Sift & Winnow modules in total, numbered 1 through 6.  In setting up the remaining five modules , follow the directions above and change the custom parameter to each module number.

For additional support please contact the Sift & Winnow staff.
