Moodle - Possible Problems Posting Videos and Images

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

Troubleshooting possible problems that arise when trying to upload or post videos and images in Moodle.

One problem that could occur when posting an image in a quiz or other document is the image showing up as blank box with a red x in the upper left hand corner:

This is most likely caused by copying and pasting the image from another source.

  1. A way to fix this issue is to go to the image source and Save Picture As...

  2. Edit the post that you want the document in, right click on the image that is not showing up properly, and select "Insert/edit Image".

  3. Click on the Find or upload an image... link under the General tab.

  4. This will bring up "File Picker".  Select Browse in the screen and select the image you saved earlier.  After you select the image click on Upload this File.

  5. You will be brought back to the "Insert/edit image" screen.

  6. If the new image appears too big you can adjust the size by selecting "Appearance" and changing the dimensions of the image.

  7. Select Update and the image should appear correctly.

Note: After saving changes, make sure to preview the post to ensure that the image will appear correctly to all users.

When posting a quicktime video, a problem that could occur is the video appears as a blue question mark instead of a video:

This is likely cause by copying and pasting a video.  To fix this, you will need to save the original video to your computer.

After you have saved the video to your computer, refer to Posting Images, Video, and Audio Clips to post the video.
