Moodle - Possible Problems with Gradebook

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

This article describes problems and possible solutions to problems with the Moodle Gradebook.

Unable to Edit Gradebook
One problem that sometimes occurs with large classes or classes with a large number of graded items is not being able to edit grades.  The problem occurs when selecting Turn Editing On in the Grader Report.  Instead of being able to fill in the boxes with grade, a gray box appears.  This is caused by the server process running out of memory.

The best way to work around this problem is limiting the number of students that appear on the page.
To change this setting, go to the menu at the top of the Grader Report and select Grader Report under "My Preferences".

You will then be brought to the "Grader report preferences" page.  Scroll down to the "General" section and you will see an option that says "Students per page".

Enter the number of students you would like to be seen per page there.  The recommended number of students per page is 15.  This keeps the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the page visible and also results in a much more responsive page.
