Moodle - Group Assignments


UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

This article will go over how to use the new group assignment feature in Moodle 3.0.

Group Assignments:

Group Assignments allows instructors to set an assignment which a group can work on collaboratively -and receive a common (or individual) grade.

To enable Group Assignments, an instructor must first enable Group Mode in their course.  

To do this you need to go to the "Administration" bar on the left side of your screen and select Edit Settings under the Course Administration dropdown.

Then scroll down to the Groups sections and change to Group Mode dropdown to either Separate Groups or Visible Groups.

After one of the options is selected Save Changes.

After an instructor has created an assignment, select Edit Settings in the "Administration" block when in the assignment page.

Under "Group submission settings" there will be an option called "Students submit in groups." Select Yes from the drop-down menu.

This will make it so students from each group in the course will share the same submission that they can all edit and submit.

The students can then be graded either as a group or individually.  This will be an option given to the instructor when grading the assignments.
