Moodle - Best Practices for Creating a Quiz

UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

This article will take you through best way to create a quiz in Moodle 2.4.

Creating Questions First

The best first step to take when creating a quiz is to create the questions first.
The recommended procedure when creating questions is to first create a category for your questions.  For every quiz you make, you should make a different category to separate the questions from each quiz.  This will make it much easier to find the questions when you create your quiz later.  Also, this will allow you to add random questions from a category to a quiz.  So, for example, if you have 10 questions in a quiz category and select to add 5 random questions to a quiz, each student that takes the quiz will have different questions in a different order. Another use of categories that is popular and recommended is to create categories within a certain quiz category to group questions of the same format (e.g. Multiple Choice, Short Answer). This will help you to better organize quizzes with many questions.

Creating the Quiz

After you have created your questions, it is time to create the quiz.
For instructions, visit the Creating a Quiz KnowledgeBase article.
When creating a quiz you will be taken through the entire settings page of the quiz.  These settings can be very specific and hard to understand exactly what they do.
To see more information about what a particular setting does, select the gray question mark next to the setting:

If you are still confused after clicking the question mark, more information can be found in the Quiz Settings Moodle Docs Page.
