Moodle - Removing a Question from an Active Quiz

UW-Madison is adopting Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system, and discontinuing support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and Moodle. Access to D2L and Moodle will permanently end June 1, 2018. For information about retaining materials from D2L or Moodle, please refer to this document.

Sometimes after students take a quiz, you find a question did not work well or did not get the kind of responses you wanted. While there is no way to actually remove the question after attempts have been made on a quiz, this document goes over how to remove the question for grading purposes so that it will not effect student grades.

Removing a Question

First, open the quiz you would like to change.
Select Edit quiz under "Quiz administration" in the "Administration" block.

This will bring you to the "Editing quiz" page.  Click on the "Editing quiz" tab at the top of the page.

On this page, find the question you would like to remove.  Next to that question there will be a "Marked out of:" section with a number.  Change this number to 0 and select Save.

The question now should now carry of weight of 0 for all students.  This effectively will remove the question from the quiz even though the question cannot physically be removed.  If you have more students planning on taking the quiz, the question will still show up for them.  You can just tell them to skip it, since their answer to the question will not effect their grade at all.
