Moodle Support for Lifelong Learning (non-credit) Programs


UW-Madison has adopted Canvas as its single, centrally supported learning management system. As of 6/1/2018, support for Desire2Learn (D2L) and most Moodle courses has been discontinued. Access to those courses has permanently ended. However, certain Moodle courses that are part of the Adanced Quizzing Content Functional Gaps project are still available on Moodle. Those courses are located on the Moodle Extension site.

The UW-Madison Moodle Service is providing Moodle hosting for several lifelong learning programs. This relationship is governed by an agreement that is different from the agreement for hosting credit-bearing (timetable) classes. This document describes those differences and details the support model for users of these programs.

UW-Madison Moodle Service

The UW-Madison Moodle Service (UWMM) is an enterprise-level service at the University of Wisconsin-Madison that serves many of the Moodle classes on the Madison campus.  The service is funded by the CIO's office and the College of Engineering and is managed by the College of Engineering.  The vision for the service is that it should host all Moodle courses for the campus including both credit-bearing and lifelong learning (non-credit) classes and both term based and non-term based classes. However, current funding for the service is primarily intended to support credit-bearing (timetable) classes. This document describes the relationship between UWMM and the lifelong learning programs utilizing the service.

Agreement With Lifelong Learning Programs

The agreement between the lifelong learning programs and UWMM is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding.  That MOU is viewable at Non-credit Memorandum of Understanding. This document is intended to reiterate and expand on that agreement in a more reader-friendly tone.

Important points to keep in mind:

  • UWMM is scheduled to be retired as of 6/30/2018.  There are no plans in place to extend the service beyond that date.
  • UWMM is currently hosting lifelong learning programs at no charge, but as the program grows new funding may be needed.
  • UW-Madison is moving to a new Learning Management System (Canvas). We are aware that Lifelong Learning Programs have not yet been given access to Canvas. Nevertheless, Lifelong learning programs need to understand that the continued existence of a centrally-supported Moodle service beyond 6/30/2018 is unlikely.
  • UWMM has set the following capacity limits for lifelong learning programs
    • Fall 2015 - 15 courses total with, an additional limit of 1,000 users
    • Spring 2016 - 50 courses total, with an additional limit of 2,000 users
    • Beyond spring 2016 - UWMM will set these limits after a review meeting with the lifelong learning program representatives

Identity and Access Management

All users (students, instructors, course designers, administrators, guests, etc.) must use a UW-Madison NetID for access to the system.  While many lifelong learning students will obtain their NetIDs through the new automated NetID creating system that is part of the L3 project, all valid NetIDs will be acceptable including existing student, faculty, and staff NetIDs and NetIDs created for guest instructors and others via the Manifest system.  No "local" Moodle based accounts will be generated for this project.

Support Model

Please understand that UWMM is providing services for lifelong learning programs at no charge and that UWMM has no dedicated user support staff.  Most support for faculty and students will be provided by the DoIT Help Desk, and by learning support staff within the lifelong learning programs.  Each lifelong learning program will provide one or more support contacts so that users of their services can locate appropriate help when they need it. These support contacts will be listed in the Moodle support "routing" KB article. Lifelong learning instructional support staff and other advanced users are expected to make use of the Moodle KB, the help and support available through the Moodle Council, the Moodle support mailing list, and community forums and documentation provided by  Help from UWMM technical staff should only be requested for advanced technical questions which cannot be answered by other means.  Those would generally be questions that require an understanding of the Moodle source code or technical details about how Moodle is configured and managed at UW-Madison.
