Badger Data Access: Requesting Access
This document provides users an overview on requesting data or technology access using the Badger Data Access application.
The Badger Data Access application allows users to request specific classification and row level security access to various UW Madison data domains and related technology. Once submitted, requests are automatically routed through the required approval steps applicable to the user’s division.
Follow the steps below to request access:
- Access the Badger Data Access application at access.data.wisc.edu and log in with your SSO credentials.
- On the My Roles landing page, scroll down to the My Data Access Roles section and click the “Request New Access” button

- The Request Access Roles page displays and includes a list of roles you possess, as well as all available roles that can be requested in the Potential Access Roles section

- In the Potential Access Roles section, locate the Domain and Subdomain for which you wish to request access and click the corresponding “Add Role” button

- You can view more information about each role by clicking the “More Info” button

- You can view more information about each role by clicking the “More Info” button
- Select the appropriate Classification and Row Level Security on the popup and click Submit
Note: Row Level Security represents which rows on the views will be returned for this subdomain. Currently only the University level is available for selection for all data roles. Row Level Security applies to Data access only. It does not apply to requests for Technology access and should be left blank in those instances.
- The Domain, Subdomain, Classification, and Row Level selected is added to the request and displayed in the 'Access roles included in this request' section at the top of the page.

- Repeat steps 4-6 to include multiple roles in a single submission.
- Enter a Justification for why the access is needed (required).
Justifications should help those who will be approving your request understand the business reasons you have to access the data. Please be sure to include any pertinent details about how this request is generally applicable to your job or required to complete a specific task.
Example: "I am a policy analyst with the Institutional Research and Decision Support team and will need to use this data to analyze applicant, matriculation, and retention trends on an ongoing basis as a part of my position."
- Review the Compliance Agreement and check the box agreeing to abide by it (required).

- Click Submit.
- A Success message appears confirming the submission was successful.

- Return to the My Roles page to track the status of each role included in the request as it moves forward through the various required approvals in the Pending Data Access Roles section.

- You will receive an email notification when the request has passed all required approvals.
- NOTE: Approvers may also Push Back or Deny a request. See Badger Data Access: Pushed Back and Denied Requests for how to address a Pushed Back or Denied request.
