Science Hall public computer guidelines

This document contains information about policies, guidelines, and best use recommendations for the public computers in Science Hall 009 (Nelson computer lab), 310 (Map Library), 380 (classroom), and M376 (Geography Computer Lab).

GNP IT, the Department of Geography, and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies have computers available for use in some locations in Science Hall:

  • SH 009: Nelson Institute computer lab
    • Open to Nelson Institute students during regular building hours. Please see staff in SH 070 for the entry code.
  • SH 310: Map Library
  • SH 380: teaching lab/classroom
    • SH 380 is primarily a teaching lab and is not intended as a drop-in computer lab. When a class is taking place in SH 380, students who are not enrolled in that class are expected to go elsewhere. Computers in SH 380 may be available outside of scheduled class times (during normal building hours, typically with prior arrangement).
  • SH M376: Geography Computer Lab
    • Generally open during regular building hours.

These locations are primarily intended for academic use, with priority given to users engaged in educational, research, and university-related activities related to the aforementioned departments.

Users must use their own university credentials to access lab computers. Sharing login information is prohibited.

Please do not save your data locally to these computers! Classroom and lab computers are subject to being erased or replaced at any time. These computers are also configured to regularly clean out inactive user profiles (accounts that have not been logged in for over 10 days). In any of these situations, any locally saved data will be lost! Please use a USB flash drive or cloud storage (e.g., OneDrive) to store your files/work.

Be sure to save your work and log off of the computer when you are done. You may lose data if you leave a session logged in. Please note that the computers in these locations are restarted nightly.

To report any computer problems, please email gnp-helpdesk@wisc.edu. Please include the computer name from the label on the front or top of the PC.

By logging into a computer in any of these locations, you are agreeing to the terms and conditions of the University of Wisconsin System's Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources: https://www.wisconsin.edu/regents/policies/acceptable-use-of-information-technology-resources/.
