Chancellor Discusses 2024 Initiatives,  ASM Shares Goals for This Year

MADISON, WI — The Associated Students of Madison Student Council met for the second time on Wednesday, September 27th where both Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and ASM members discussed their campaigns for the new school year.

The Chancellor called attention to four main points of focus for this school year: housing, mental health, sustainability, and creating a sense of belonging within the community. She emphasized the recent development of an off-campus housing services office, which aims to provide information and resources to students who are looking for housing. Her efforts in creating more access to mental health providers across campus were also highlighted. ASM has proudly collaborated with the Chancellor and other university administrators on sustainability initiatives as well, including expanding research enterprises and setting goals for zero waste and carbon neutrality. Lastly, the Chancellor discussed her goals of opening several spaces for conversations with students of all diverse backgrounds, with a particular emphasis on Black and first-generation college students.

Following her speech, Chancellor Mnookin fielded questions relating to inclusion initiatives for  returning adult students on campus and further efforts in making more university buildings LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. Representative Kunle Ojo asked about efforts being made to increase the response times for hate and bias reports and Sustainability Chair Christina Treacy questioned how students can get more involved in future sustainability projects.

The Associated Students of Madison appreciates the Chancellor for taking the time to meet with our Student Council and we look forward to a continued collaborative relationship with her and her staff throughout the school year.

Further business included a discussion of ASM’s goals and campaigns for the school year. Anti-Violence Coordinator Landis Varughese discussed his plans for the Color of Drinking Task Force, which involves conducting a survey on the impacts of alcohol culture on students of color. Grant Allocation Committee Chair Amaya Boman revealed that her efforts on creating tax exemptions for RSOs are almost fully accomplished. Vice Chair Dominic Zappia mentioned the possibility of digitizing school IDs and collaborating with the Legislative Committee on making Wiscards a valid voter ID.

The next Student Council meeting will be on Wednesday, October 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hearing Room on the 4th Floor of the Student Activity Center at 333 East Campus Mall.
