conflicts between Symantec AV, MS Office and samba-shared drives cause computers to restart when saving from Office programs to a samba drive

Problem: If a file is saved on the U: drive, the workstation crashes and restarts.

Explanation: This problem occurs due to a bug in the version of Norton Antivirus that is used on CAE Windows lab computers. When a file in a Samba shared drive (the U: drive or a mapped Unix drive) is renamed, the computer reboots and causes the work to be lost.

Solution: Files can be renamed instead through the command prompt, and this problem can also be avoided by advising users not to save Microsoft Office documents directly into the U: drive.

The bug is fixed in the latest version of Norton which will be deployed over the summer.
